<aside> <img src="/icons/info-alternate_blue.svg" alt="/icons/info-alternate_blue.svg" width="40px" /> The FLATS exam is an online language exam developed by Brigham Young University to test beginning-level (i.e., 101, 102, and 201) listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and grammatical accuracy. Modern Languages and Literatures uses this exam to give students an opportunity to test out of the BA world language proficiency requirement, including in languages not offered at GVSU. FLATS is currently available in 52 languages.

College credit cannot be earned by taking this exam; it can only be used to test out of the BA world language proficiency requirement. The exam is pass/fail; partial credit cannot be earned either. You will be required to take a language offered at GVSU if you do not pass all three levels (101, 102, and 201). This exam can be taken once every 6 months.
The FLATS exam is free for students; GVSU will cover the $50 FLATS exam cost
Registration for the exam is coordinated by the Language Resource Center Assistant Coordinator, Chris Cirefice ([email protected]); please fill out this form to request FLATS registration and allow 2 business days for follow-up; Chris will contact you via email to confirm your exam details and proctoring preferences and get you registered for the test
The student must decide whether to take the FLATS exam in-person or online:
